The Origins of Forest Bathing

The term ‘forest bathing’ or Shinrin-yoku was coined in 1982 by Japan's Forest Agency. It was developed to address the growing stress and health issues faced by Japanese workers due to their demanding work cultures. To combat these challenges, the agency and government promoted wellness trips to the country's bamboo forests, which were designed to encourage relaxation, meditation, and rejuvenation. These experiences aimed to reverse a work culture that was causing numerous young people to suffer from stress-induced health problems, including premature heart attacks. Decades later, the benefits of forest bathing are recognized worldwide, leading many to explore what forest bathing is and how to do forest bathing effectively.

What is Forest Bathing?

Forest bathing is a concept that is not just about taking a relaxing walk into the woods but revolves around the power to heal through breath work, meditation, bathing ourselves in negative ions, electric-magnetic frequencies of the earth, the simple natural environment that benefits our health and wellbeing when immersed in all of the above.

However, the North American population has been trending towards the urban lifestyle in the recent decade. We are trading in nature for high-rises and time in front of a screen and it’s creating new stress levels and illnesses, many caused by the continuous bombardment of artificial electromagnetic fields, affecting our brain and our natural biorhythm. Scientific research has begun to look into these effects and doesn’t rule out that radio waves may not only affect our brain activity but also affect our nervous system, biorhythm, and overall wellbeing.

“A forest is part of the plant kingdom, the Second Kingdom amongst the mineral, animal, human and soul Kingdoms. We must learn not only to protect this life-giving resource, as it is truly Royal,
but to appreciate it as Mother Nature’s Holy Apothecary, a magical place to go to renew our weary Spirit.”

A Bit on Biorhythm

What is Biorhythm? It is the acknowledgment of natural cycles within nature. This includes man and our physical, emotional and mental cycles over a period of a day, a week, a month, a season or a year. As we are Nature, which we often forget, we are subject to the laws of nature; to the natural ebb and flow of life, which means constant changes within our body.

These changes occur subtly and naturally, with or without our influence. And with the introduction of wi-fi into modern-day life, we have a new influence to deal with. Most people are not consciously aware of these unseen radio waves or what effect they have on the brain or nervous system. However, more and more people are starting to question their feelings of unrest, sleeplessness, irritation, anxiety and depression.

How to Begin Your Journey with Forest Bathing

  1. Choose Your Environment Wisely: Start by selecting a peaceful forest setting. It doesn’t need to be a power hike; a quiet, mindful walk amidst trees can be profoundly therapeutic.
  2. Engage All Your Senses: As you walk, breathe deeply and allow yourself to be fully present. Let the forest’s aromatherapy envelop you. Notice the colours, the sounds, and the scents around you. Each element is a part of the healing process.
  3. Pause and Reflect: When something catches your eye, stop. Reflect on its beauty and how it relates to the cycle of life around you and within you. This can help you reconnect with nature's rhythms and find peace in the continual flow of life.
  4. Experience Grounding: Take a moment to walk barefoot. Feel the earth under your feet. Grounding, or earthing, helps rebalance your body’s electrical energy by connecting you to the earth.
  5. Plan Regular Visits: Forest bathing should be a regular part of your life. Whether it’s a weekly solo trip or a monthly family outing, regular exposure to nature is key to maintaining mental and physical wellness.
  6. Mindful Meditation: Integrate meditation into your forest bathing experience. Find a quiet spot, perhaps by a stream or under a canopy of trees, and meditate for a few minutes. This practice can enhance the forest's calming effects and help you achieve deeper relaxation and clarity.
  7. Journaling: Bring a journal with you and take a few moments to write down your thoughts and feelings. This can be a reflective practice that helps you capture insights and emotions that arise during your walk.
  8. Photography: Engage in mindful photography; take pictures of the scenery, the play of light through the leaves, or close-ups of the flora and fauna. This not only helps you focus and appreciate the details but also creates lasting memories of your experiences.
